Yes, you heard that title correctly, KFC is exploring the use of 3D printing technology. This technology means the removal of the animal from the production without the loss of tests, texture and convenience for their existing client base and possibly a new market.

The bioprinting method that they are exploring has three distinct advantages:

1. Biomeat has exactly the same microelements as the original product.

2. The process excludes various additives that are used in traditional farming and animal husbandry, creating a cleaner final product.

3. Cell-based meat products are also more ethical – the production process does not cause any harm to animals.

So how are they actually doing this? Well in Russia they are doing so by launching the development of innovative 3D bioprinting technology to create ‘chicken meat’ in cooperation with the 3D Bioprinting Solutions research laboratory!

Here’s what KFC had to say about the project:

“This is in response to the growing popularity of a healthy lifestyle and nutrition, the annual increase in demand for alternatives to traditional meat and the need to develop more environmentally friendly methods of food production.

 

The project aims to create the world’s first laboratory-produced chicken nuggets. They will be as close as possible in both taste and appearance to the original KFC product, while being more environmentally friendly to produce than ordinary meat.” 

They are expecting to receive a final product for testing towards the end of 2020 in Moscow.

 

So how exactly would this work?

 

3D Bioprinting Solutions is developing additive bioprinting technology using chicken cells and plant material, allowing it to reproduce the taste and texture of chicken meat almost without involving animals in the process (Amazing right?!).

 

What are the benefits?

 

Aside from the obvious removal of animals from the food production, The American Environmental Science & Technology Journal found that this would have a minimal negative impact on the environment, allowing energy consumption to be cut by more than half, greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced 25 fold and 100 times less land to be used than traditional farm-based meat production. (This is huge!)

For KFC this is all part of what they call the ‘Restaurant of the future’ concept. They believe crafted meat products are the future and will address the aforementioned looming global problems.

In the future, the rapid development of such technologies will allow us to make 3D-printed meat products more accessible and we are hoping that the technology created as a result of our cooperation with KFC will help accelerate the launch of cell-based meat products on the market”, said Yusef Khesuani, co-founder and Managing Partner of 3D Bioprinting Solutions.

 

Final Thoughts

 

Whether you are a fan or critic of fast food or junk food, you cannot deny the impact technology like this would have on the future of food and the welfare of animals. Over the years, companies like KFC have received huge criticism over their treatment of animals, welfare standards, and the general nature of their business (from a vegan perspective). However, with technology like this, the potential for millions of people to be able to reduce the harm they place on animals through the support of chains like this one is astronomical and for us is the ultimate game-changer in taking animals out of the supply chain.

Whilst some will say we shouldn’t support them, we have to realise the sheer scale and influence they have over the way people eat, whether we like it or not. If these chains can produce food without animal harm and with less impact on the environment, we have to be part of the conversation.
