In this vegan chat, we speak with inspiring young vegan Romy Dixon about her journey to veganism. Romy is a teenage vegan who creates amazing vegan dishes via her Youtube channel and shares reviews and feedback on some of her favourite vegan products.

It’s great to see younger vegan’s pushing the movement forward and Romy is such a positive role model for a healthy vegan life.

So Romy, thank you for chatting with us.  Tell us, were you born into a vegetarian or vegan family? If not,  How long have you been vegan for? 
No, I wasn’t born into a vegan/vegetarian family! I went vegan about 6 1/2 months ago, and it was honestly the best decision of my life! I am vegan because I saw some videos of cruelty within the meat, dairy and egg industry on Instagram, and knew immediately I had to change my lifestyle. I thought “If I wouldn’t eat my dogs or drink their milk, why should I eat another animal?” That is what really made me switch to a vegan lifestyle. I was also a vegetarian 3 months before going vegan!
What did your parents think and say when you decided to go vegan?

Initially, they were very concerned about where I was going to get all my nutrients like protein, iron, calcium etc from, but now I have educated them about how easy it is to eat and be vegan, they kind of just go with the flow!

They know that I am getting all my vital nutrients and they say that I look really healthy, a lot healthier than I was before I went vegan!
What do kids at school think of your vegan lifestyle? 

To be honest, most of them are super supportive of it! I have girls messaging or talking to me at school about how much they like my account, which is really nice. Of course, there are always some people that aren’t the nicest about it, but I always try to ignore them and keep doing what I love! My friendship group is also soo supportive of my Instagram account and me being vegan, which I am so grateful about! They are seriously the best.
Are there any difficulties at school or home with being vegan? 

Not really. I make all my own meals and take my own recess and lunch to school, so I find being vegan pretty easy with my home/school lifestyle. My Mum also eats a lot of what I eat, which I love because it allows me to enjoy the same meal with one of my family members regularly! 
What’s packed for school lunch and snacks? 

It changes every day, but usually, for recess, I would have some protein balls or a baked/raw treat that I have made. For lunch, sometimes its a salad, pesto pasta, fried rice or even some baked sweet potato, lentils/chickpeas/beans, quinoa and greens!
What’s your go-to snack at home?

Definitely gluten-free toast with almond butter, banana + cinnamon! The best combo ever in my opinion.
What’s your favourite meal to cook? 

Probably a lentil bolognese with pasta or a stir fry with rice! Super quick, easy + delicious.
Who has inspired your journey thus far? 

Literally so many people! In terms of YouTubers, definitely Amanda DucksAshley Wicka, Pippin Jardine + Tess Begg. They are so inspiring and have given me great meal ideas to try! 

What can viewers expect to learn from watching your Youtube videos? 
That vegan food can be as simple or extravagant as you want it to be! Majority of my meals that I make are seriously the easiest things ever to make, but are so delicious! Also, that being vegan isn’t only about the food that you eat, but the clothes you wear and skincare/makeup products you use as well.
What do you hope to achieve with your IG account & YouTube channel?
I would definitely love to become an Instagram influencer one day! It is also a dream of mine to one day write an ebook. In terms of youtube, life has been pretty hectic lately and I haven’t really been getting a lot of uploads up. But once I have a bit more time on my hands, I would love to grow my youtube channel!
What’s a little fact, or something you have learned since becoming vegan? 

Just how easy the lifestyle is! Going into it, I didn’t really have any clue as to how I would stay vegan. But, over the last couple of months, I’ve really recognized being vegan as a way of life, and couldn’t think of myself not being vegan. Also, just how many animals are slaughtered for food alone every year. It’s so cruel and very upsetting, and I am very happy that I am no longer contributing to that violence and saving over 200 animals a year because of my decision to go vegan 6 1/2 months ago 🙂
