ABC and Animals Australia expose the inhumane pig industry
Last night, ABC aired a heart-wrenching expose on the state of pig farming in Australia with footage of pigs being subjected to gas chambers exposed to thousands of viewers. The expose is part of a large campaign by animal rights organisation Animals Australia to highlight the abhorrent conditions in which farmed animals are exposed here and around the world in 2023.
Much of the footage was obtained by those working with the Farm Transparency Project as part of the Dominion Movement Group.
In Australia, pig farming is a major industry, and whilst animals must be stunned before being slaughtered, most farms still use carbon dioxide to achieve this. Pigs are placed inside steel cages and then lowered into a chamber that contains a high concentration of CO2. Within 20-30 seconds, the animals lose consciousness. As much as this may seem humane, it still does not justify the cruelty that the animals are subjected to during their lives.
As the world becomes more conscious of animal welfare, more and more people are thankfully choosing to boycott meat altogether. The good news is, there are alternatives to bacon that are both vegan-friendly and readily available in Australia. In this article, we’ll explore some of these delicious substitutes, and let you know how you can help reduce demand for meat by breaking this cycle with your food choices.

While it’s hard to watch, it is essential to educate ourselves so that we can make informed decisions as consumers. The more we can break this cycle of demand and supply, the less of a need there will be for this industry to continue.
