No Meat May 2024 starts next week!
No Meat May is a campaign run each year which encourages (as you can imagine) people to give up meat for the month of May.
No Meat May’s mission is to inspire and support more people to shift to plant-rich eating, so that we can all create a healthier, kinder, more sustainable world.
No Meat May started in 2013 and is a 31 day challenge that has changed so many lives for the better and has had a huge impact on reducing animal suffering.
The team at No Meat May are determined to inspire more people to change the world by shifting to more plant-rich eating.
They are committed to ensuring that everyone has a good time & does it well too! If you need help with meat free recipes be sure to visit our recipes section here!
What happens through May?
For 31 days, our friends at No Meat May will send you all the recipes, tips, and inspiration you need to keep filling your plates with scrumptious plant-based food.
Perhaps even more inspiring is the lovely, welcoming community of current and past participants on Facebook, who will be there to cheer on this year’s participants every step of the way.
Whether you’re in it to improve your health, save animals, reduce your environmental impact or explore new foods – you are bound to feel a sense of empowerment by making thoughtful food choices this May.

Donations
The team depend on the generosity of the community to keep doing what they do.
Funds raised through the No Meat May challenge are directed 100% to improving the event year on year and to supporting more people to shift to plant-rich eating.
4 Big Reasons
No Meat May are promoting what they can ‘4 big reasons’ to ditch the meat this coming month of May. Here are why they think we should all be doing it!

Health
Prevent chronic disease and welcome many health benefits with a broader and greater intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains and legumes.
Consuming food from plant rather than animal sources is the primary reason why vegetarians and vegans have a lower risk of being overweight, or suffering from many chronic diseases.
Most plant food sources are lower in saturated fat, free of cholesterol, higher in fibre and are all good sources of antioxidants and phytonutrients, all of which may contribute to a reduced disease risk.
Environment
Reducing or eliminating meat and animal products is an action you can take that will help save our shared home.
How? It’s simple… less meat and animal products equals
- fewer farmed animals
- less greenhouse gas emmissions
- less deforestation
- less species extinction
- reduced water use
- reduced poisonous effluent
- less overfishing
Animals
Factory farming is the number one cause of animal cruelty. You can help end it.
We are grossly abusing our power over other animals.
Pigs, cows, chickens, fish, and other animals raised for food suffer miserably on modern farms where profit is the name of the game.
Laws that protect dogs and cats specifically exclude farmed animals from most protection.
As a result, blatant abuse is now standard practice on farms both large and small.
By changing our behaviour, and educating those around us, we can create positive change for animals. Together we will end factory farming.
Food Security
To feed 10 billion people by 2050 we will need to double our current food supply.
Yet, as our population increases, available land, water, energy, and other finite resources decrease.
To meet the growing demand under our current diets and food systems, we would have to clear most of the world’s forests, empty the oceans, and use all of our fresh water reserves – which is currently happening. 😱
Feeding the world without destroying our planet will require nothing short of a new agricultural & cultural revolution – with us eating a lot less meat and animal products.
- The resources required to raise animals and process them into food products is significantly higher than the resources required to produce most plant-based foods.
- By using more than their ‘fair share’, animal-based foods are a form of redistribution that increase food scarcity & political instability, especially in low-income countries.
- Valuable land which could be used for growing more efficient crops, or left to drawdown carbon & support critical ecosystems that support life, is instead used to produce more animal products.
- Many of these animal products are exported and consumed by the world’s most privileged people, leaving the most vulnerable communities without adequate access to healthy food.
- Of the world’s almost  8 billion people, nearly 10% – an estimated  768 million of us – were counted as undernourished  in 2020.
