10 Quick Questions with the Vegan Campout Australia
10 Quick Questions with the Vegan Campout Australia
In our latest 10 quick question chat, we sat down with Cynthia of the Vegan Campout Australia to chat about this incredible event.
This is the first time ever that an event like this is being run down under, and we cannot wait! If you haven’t already be sure to visit their page for all the information and grab your tickets here.
Enjoy the chat.
1. Tell us about the VCO team and why you embarked on this project
We’re a small team of only 2 people with the help of many of our friends. We met Jordan, the founder of Vegan Camp Out, many years ago and quickly became very close friends. After seeing the positive effect that VCO had in the UK, we decided that it would be amazing to bring the event to Australia with the goal to strengthen the community, support vegan businesses, organisations and sanctuaries and inspire more people to become vegan.
2. What is your hope for the event in Australia?
Our hope for the event is to continue for years, even decades to come. We think it is so important to have an event where we can all come together to celebrate veganism. It can be quite isolating sometimes to be vegan, and being surrounded by other vegans can be so empowering and motivating to continue our efforts and create a better future for the animals.
This event will be a fun way for non-vegans to also engage with the vegan community and lifestyle to see that it is so possible for everyone to be vegan.
3. What has the vegan community’s response to the event been like?
The vegan community has been so supportive, we are amazed to see people traveling from all over the country and even from overseas to attend the event.
We even have had many people reaching out wanting to buy tickets for those who can’t afford to which is why we started a “pay it forward” initiative.
4. You have an amazing lineup this year, any dream headliners for future years?
We have many dreams of future headliners, however we created this event for the community and as a result we chose this years line-up based on a Facebook poll that we ran a year before the event launched in which over 1000 people voted on who they wanted to see on the line up the most, and we will be doing this poll every year so keep an eye out and put your votes in 🙂
5. What are you most looking forward to at the event?
So many things! We are very community-orientated, and what we look forward to the most is seeing people enjoying themselves and having a good time.

6. What is your favourite Vegan Eatery(s)?
We are based in Melbourne, and our favourite eatery here is Cockatoo Kitchen, a small vegan Thai restaurant in Richmond. The owners are some of the loveliest people we have ever met! And when we are in the CBD, we never miss a chance to visit Vegie Tribe or Union Kiosk! We also lived in Brisbane for a year, and absolutely loved the burgers from Grassfed! In Sydney our favourites are Funky Pies in Bondi and I Should be Souvlaki in Newtown who will both be at the event!
7. Favourite Vegan brand(s)
This is a hard one, and we are so lucky to have such wonderful vegan brands in Australia, which makes it so easy for people to transition to a vegan lifestyle. I thrift most of my clothes, and don’t really buy any beauty products so I will have to go with some food and with my French background I think Dilectio and Noshing do amazing vegan cheeses.
8. The vegan that has influenced you the most and why?
Emma Madle who runs the Perth Vegan Expo, the World Vegan Day event in Perth as well as many other initiatives which she has taken on by herself.
She is one of the first vegans we ever met and her dedication and work for animal rights and the vegan movement is incredibly inspiring. She has also been one of our biggest supporters of the event behind the scenes.
9. Anyone interested in veganism needs to watch/listen or read…..
We don’t think this is a one size fits all. So many people are interested in veganism initially for different reasons, however, we always recommend different types of documentaries depending on who we are talking to and what they are most interested by when it comes to veganism.
It’s also why we have a variety of different types of speakers from all walks of life promoting veganism in their own unique ways. For anyone who is interested in veganism, we would encourage you to watch the videos/documentaries some of the people on our lineup have been involved in like The Game Changers, Seaspiracy, Land of hope and glory, and more.
10. A vegan future is…
…Coming! We know it will take some time, and to be realistic we don’t think the entire world would go vegan in our lifetime. But we are hopeful, and it is amazing to see that more and more people are becoming vegan, and to see vegan options growing everywhere around us.
