Famous Australian Vegans
While we might be aware of the benefits of veganism, word is definitely spreading, with many high-profile Aussies raising awareness and encouraging others to embrace this compassionate and sustainable way of living too!
And it’s not just because it’s the latest ‘trend’. In fact, these famous Australians have gone vegan for a variety of reasons, ranging from ethical concerns to personal health reasons, and environmental impact.
Portia De Rossi
Actress Portia De Rossi was always an animal lover, but admits her affection didn’t extend to all animals. She told Oprah.com: “I categorised them: Dogs were smart, loyal, and loving, so they were more valuable than, say, goats or pigs. I think that’s why I never thought twice about eating meat.”
Everything changed when Portia and wife Ellen moved to a Californian farm and she witnessed a beautiful, human-like exchange between their cows and a new horse.
On going vegan, Portia says: “I feel happier, like I’m contributing to making the world a less violent place.”
Nick Kyrgios
2022 Wimbledon finalist and seven-time ATP singles champion, Nick Kyrgios is proof that you don’t need an animal-based diet to reach the top of your sport! Many famous tennis players (hello, Williams sisters, Djokovic) have gone vegan to increase their fitness and energy levels, as recommended by their health professionals. For Kyrgios, it’s for different reasons. He admits it’s not so much for health (as he loves a pint of beer), but for his love of animals. This love was highlighted in the horrific 2020 bushfires when he penned a column for Athlete’s Voice titled ‘The Koala Photo That Broke My Heart’
Ruby Rose
Actress Ruby Rose cites a childhood memory of realising the origins of – and cruelty associated with – the shark fin soup she used to eat, as a main driver towards her veganism.
She’s since become a huge advocate for animal rights, even encouraging her fans to go vegan to fight back against Trump’s policies on climate change.
Lisa and Jessica Origliasso
Perhaps better known as The Veronicas, these talented twins are long-time vegans and campaigners for animal rights. And it’s not just embracing tofu – the passionate duo have adopted a cruelty-free lifestyle, using their platforms to regularly speak out against the fur trade.“I’ve never felt better, since my decision to lead a plant-based diet!” Jessica told PETA. “It is for the good of animals, my health, and the future of our planet.”
DJ Tigerlily
Musician DJ Tigerlily was living an unhealthy lifestyle thanks to the late-night junk food and drinking associated with the touring DJ life. Upon experiencing health issues, with the help of specialists and alternative therapists, she discovered the benefits of a vegan diet. It tied in perfectly with her compassion for animals, and she’s now a passionate campaigner for animal rights.
She told Now to Love: “I’ve had so many positive changes since going plant based. I lost weight and toned up, my skin and hair has been healthier and better than ever, I think I look more energetic and younger.”
Final Thoughts
Whether you’ve adopted a vegan diet (amazing!), or gone even further to living a completely cruelty-free lifestyle (meaning your purchases are also not tested on animals; think The Veronica’s cruelty-free fragrance Untouched, and makeup choices like this fab vegan bronzer – It’s super encouraging to have these Aussie celebs in our court!
