We all love a good pizza. Now just because you are a vegan or vegan-curious shouldn’t mean you can’t enjoy a delicious slice just like everyone else. So in this feature, we wanted to explore some of the amazing new vegan pizza toppings available at selected eateries and explore the innovative new vegan cheeses being used across Australia and the rest of the world.

Hummus

The vegan savior, hummus is that versatile spread that works in so many different ways. Now it can even work on pizza! Use it as a paste on the pizza base or as a topping in its own right!

Vegan Cheese

A cheesy pizza is a delicacy we all deserve. Luckily for new and old vegans, many pizza places are now beginning to offer vegan cheese on a range of pizzas. Vegan cheese is usually made from the following ingredients:

– Cashew
– Sesame and sunflower;
– Nuts that include: Cashew, pine nut, almond
– Soybeans
– Peanuts
– Coconut oil
– Nutritional yeast
– Tapioca
– Rice

Eggplant

Eggplant is versatile and tasty. Many pizzas will use eggplant to replace or replicate meat as it is high in fiber and packed with nutrients

Avocado

If you aren’t having it on toast, then pizza is the next best thing. Known for its health properties and ‘good fats’, avo is a pizza topper for the next generation.

Plant-Based Meat

With a slew of new plant-based meats on the market, you can now completely emulate some of the traditional pizza varieties using plant-based meat varieties. Some of the plant-based meat types include those made from:

Pea Protein
Soy Protein
Rice Protein
Beet Juice extract (for bloody colour)

Potato

Filling, hearty, and delicious, this is a topping that can make a pizza. Chop or slice thinly for best results.

Jackfruit

Jackfruit has a pulled ‘chicken’ like quality that makes it another wonderful vegan alternative for many meals, including pizza!

Cauliflower

A once boring vegetable, the humble cauliflower has had a Renaissance over the last few years and is back in a big. Add to a whole host of pizza types and be sure to soften for the best effect.
