Allen’s Jelly Beans are going vegan!
Allen’s Jelly Beans are going vegan!
Yes, the classic Allen’s Jelly Bean is getting a vegan makeover and Australia couldn’t be happier. With a few quick food colour swaps and a relaunch we are set to see this classic be veganised this year!
The change will see them remove carmine from the ingredient list, which involves the crushing of beetles in order to get a red or orange food colouring.
“Our fan favourite Allen’s jelly beans are now accessible for vegan lolly lovers,” an Allens representitive announced during the week.
Here is what the vegan food app Fussy Vegan had to say about it on their Facebook page:
“The barcode is identical to the old non vegan version and the easiest way to tell is to check for the green “Vegan Friendly” label on the top right corner of the packaging. If you do not see the vegan label, it is 100% going to be the old version, which contains carmine. Please also remember that carmine is not just used for the red or orange colours and can be present in any colour. Have you ever gotten a shade of white paint from Bunnings and noticed that they put all sorts of other colours in to mix it? Same thing with food. The carmine could be used in varying amounts in just about any colour jelly bean.
It is great to see Nestle realise that by simply swapping the carmine for a vegan friendly colouring, they can market a new product to the vegan community. Hopefully we will start to see more and more products where carmine is the only barrier to the product being vegan becoming vegan friendly in the future.”
Final Thoughts
This isn’t the first time we have seen a company change their ingredient list for a more ethical alternative, The Natural Confectionary Company have released two new varieties over the last few years, including their signature vegan mix and more recently their Berry Salad variety, which we all tried here at LGV and loved!
