Say ‘Nup To The Cup’ at Plant Vibes Cafe this year

Say ‘Nup To The Cup’ at Plant Vibes Cafe this year

As Australians grow increasingly disenchanted with the Melbourne Cup – Brisbane locals will now have a chance to say ‘Nup To The Cup’ in style!

Plant Vibes café, in partnership with advocacy group Animal Liberation Queensland and boutique marketing agency Powered PR, will host a ‘bougie’ Nup To The Cup Fundraiser on Tuesday 7th November, 2023, from 1:30pm.

The event aims to offer an alternative for people who do not want to support the animal cruelty and gambling associated with traditional Melbourne Cup events, but still want to enjoy an opportunity to dress up and celebrate for the afternoon.

“Many of us love a chance to don our favourite hat and take some selfies, but the Melbourne Cup poses so many deep ethical dilemmas and animal cruelty concerns, that it’s just not worth the party anymore,”

Said Powered PR managing director, Jessica Cotton.

“Last year, polls showed that forty-five per cent of Australians surveyed believe the Melbourne Cup promotes unhealthy gambling, while a third agreed the event normalises animal cruelty. Melbourne Cup has long been viewed as a national ‘tradition’ – but it’s time for traditions to change. Our Nup To The Cup fundraiser is an ethical alternative for people who want to glam up without a guilty conscience.”

Event organisers promise a stylish affair and relaxed atmosphere, complete with live music, plant-based canapes, and a drink on arrival included with every ticket. A professional photographer and floral photo wall will be on-hand, so that attendees can document their spring fashions without any need to attend a horse race.

“You don’t need to be vegan to say Nup To The Cup, nor do you need to be an animal rights activist. Instead, our goal for this event is to help people make one simple switch to their regular routine, by making it easy to attend a fun and fashionable substitute to the Melbourne Cup,” added Plant Vibes owner and manager, Eugenie Hows.

Most deadly year on record for racehorses

“Our Nup To The Cup Event presents an important chance for animal lovers to show their support and compassion for horses. This year has been the most lethal on racetracks around Australia, with 168 horses losing their lives so far.

This means one beautiful, sentient animal has needlessly died a catastrophic death every two days,” said Animal Liberation Queensland (ALQ) campaigns manager, Amanda Holly.

“What happens to these gentle animals off the track is just as disturbing, with the majority of racehorses being ‘discarded’ as ‘wastage’ by the racing industry. These horses are often slaughtered at knackeries and abattoirs around the country.”

All proceeds from the Nup To The Cup fundraiser at Plant Vibes will go towards supporting animal charities. The event is also entirely volunteer-run, with Plant Vibes, Powered PR, and ALQ all donating time and resources to make this fundraiser possible.

“We’re really proud that our Nup To The Cup event is a women-led, volunteer-run initiative. Tickets are strictly limited, so we encourage friends and groups to get together and book in advance to support this worthwhile cause,” said Jessica Cotton.
